We need to encourage this before telling everyone to take supplements.&#8221; In fact, there are many common magnesium-rich foods that can easily cover the 400 to 420 milligrams the National Institutes of Health recommends for men over 19.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, if for some reason you can&#8217;t get enough magnesium from your regular diet, supplements can help. And in that case, you should be sure to know the best times to take magnesium, whether you should take it with or without food, and other considerations that can help you get more bang for your buck. Here&#8217;s everything you need to know.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The body doesn&#8217;t care when it takes in magnesium.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to Pasqualiello, knowing when you take your magnesium is far more important than knowing you&#8217;re getting enough magnesium. &#8220;There&#8217;s not a lot of evidence to suggest that the timing of magnesium intake at specific moments of the day makes a big difference for most people,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, it makes sense that a more easily absorbed form of magnesium would work faster. It&#8217;s worth considering, especially if you&#8217;re taking magnesium to deal with sleep. &#8220;For easily absorbed forms of magnesium that provide some relaxation, such as magnesium glycinate, it may be most effective to take it before bed,&#8221; Pasqualiello says.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the specific type of magnesium you are taking may have side effects that may affect your intake. &#8220;Many people prefer to take magnesium with their morning meal, especially since some dosage forms, especially mild laxatives, can immediately cause unwanted digestive changes right before bed,&#8221; Pasqualiello says. &#8220;On the other hand, some people find that the effects of constipation relief are best felt after a full night&#8217;s sleep, so it may take a little trial and error to find what works best for you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>If you are deficient in magnesium, consistency is more important than timing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Magnesium deficiency can be difficult to diagnose because much of the magnesium in the body is not detected in the blood. While urine tests and other diagnostic methods can help you and your doctor understand your magnesium levels, Pasqualiello recommends anyone concerned about their magnesium intake start with a simple dietary audit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If a dietary audit or test reveals you&#8217;re not getting enough magnesium, your doctor will likely recommend a daily supplement, but it&#8217;s important to only take supplements if you know you need them,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>If you actually need to supplement with magnesium, consistency should be your top priority.
