(In botany) Since it is a plant that only lives for one year, it usually produces showy flowers and produces many seeds.

antioxidants: Any of a number of chemicals that can stop oxidation, a biologically harmful reaction. This is done by donating electrons to free radicals (reactive molecular fragments) without becoming unstable. Many plant-based foods are good sources of natural antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E.

I’m worried:(n. anxiety) A feeling of fear about some potential or upcoming situation. It’s usually a situation that you feel you have little control over.

chemicals: A substance formed when two or more atoms combine (combine) in a certain ratio and structure. For example, water is a chemical produced when two hydrogen atoms combine with one oxygen atom. Its chemical formula is H2O. Chemistry can also be used as an adjective to describe the properties of materials that result from various reactions between different compounds.

compound: (often used as a synonym for chemical) A compound is a substance that is formed when two or more chemical elements are combined (combined) in certain proportions. For example, water is a compound made of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom. The element symbol is H2O.

engineering: A field of study that uses mathematics and science to solve practical problems. People who work in this field are known as engineers.

extract: (v.) The separation of one chemical (or component of something) from a complex mixture. (noun) a substance removed from some raw material, often in concentrated form. Extracts are often obtained from plants (such as spearmint and lavender), flowers and buds (such as roses and cloves), fruits (such as lemons and oranges), and seeds and nuts (such as almonds and pistachios). Such extracts are sometimes used in cooking and often have very strong aromas and flavors.

flavonoids: A group of yellowish compounds produced by plants. Many of these chemicals are antioxidants, which can fight oxidative cell damage and often have benefits for heart health.

GABA: Abbreviation for γ-aminobutyric acid. This chemical messenger acts as a brake, or inhibitor, on brain cell firing.

herbs: A seed-producing plant that (unlike shrubs and trees) does not produce long-lived woody stems or branches and dies to the ground at the end of the growing season. (in cooking and medicine) A plant or part of a plant valued for its aroma, flavor, or therapeutic effects.

high school: Designation of grades 9 through 12 in the U.S. compulsory public education system. High school graduates can apply to university for further advanced education.

host: (in biology and medicine) an organism (or environment) in which something else exists. Humans can serve as temporary hosts for foodborne pathogens and other infectious agents. (v.) The act of providing a home or environment for something. For example, a website can host photos, news, and other types of information.

hydrochloric acid: A strong corrosive acid produced when hydrogen chloride gas dissolves in water. The human intestine produces a dilute solution of this to break down food.

microscope: An instrument used to observe objects too small to be seen with the naked eye, such as bacteria and single cells of plants and animals.

neuron: Major cell types of the nervous system: brain, spinal column, nerves. These specialized cells transmit information by generating, receiving, and conducting electrical signals. Neurons can also send signals to other cells using chemical messengers.

nicotine: A colorless, oily chemical produced by tobacco and certain other plants. It creates the “noise” that comes with smoking. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance that makes it difficult for smokers to quit smoking cigarettes. This chemical is also poisonous and is sometimes used as an insecticide to kill insects and some exotic snakes and frogs.

oxidation: (adjective, oxidative) The process by which one molecule steals electrons from another molecule. The victim of the reaction is said to have been “oxidized” and the oxidizer (thief) “reduced”. An oxidized molecule returns to its original state by stealing electrons from another molecule. Oxidative reactions by molecules within living cells are so violent that they can cause cell death. Oxidation often involves oxygen atoms, but not always.

particle: A trace amount of something.

prototype: A first or early model of a device, system, or product that still needs to be completed.

random: Something that happens by chance or without reason, based on intent or purpose. For example, simulated dietary fats can trick your mouth into thinking you’re tasting real fat because they have no calories and have the same feel on your tongue. The simulated tactile sensation could trick the brain into thinking the fingers touched something, even though the hand no longer exists and has been replaced by an artificial limb. (in computing) To attempt to imitate the condition, function, or appearance of something. Computer programs that do this are called simulations.

scientific association: A nonprofit organization founded in 1921 and based in Washington, DC. Since its founding, the association has promoted public involvement in scientific research as well as public understanding of science. The company created and continues to operate two well-known high school science competitions: the Regeneron Science Talent Search (started in 1942) and the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (founded in 1950). The third middle school competition, launched in 2010, will be known as the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge starting in 2023. The association also publishes award-winning journalism. science news (released in 1922) and Exploring science news (Created in 2003).

software: A mathematical instruction that directs computer hardware, including the processor, to perform a specific operation.

stimulation: Something that causes an action. (in medicine) a drug that stimulates the brain and causes a feeling of more energy and alertness. For example, caffeine is a mild stimulant that temporarily increases alertness and helps fight drowsiness. Other stimulants, including some dangerous illegal drugs such as cocaine, have stronger or longer-lasting effects.

organization: Made of cells, the various types of substances that make up animals, plants, and fungi. Cells within tissues function as units to perform specific functions in living organisms. For example, different organs in the human body are often made from many different types of tissue.

unit: (in measurement) A unit of measurement is a standard way of representing a physical quantity. Units of measurement provide context for what the number represents and convey the magnitude of a physical property.
