These groups can influence bone turnover and inflammation both independently and interactively.

Researchers from Fitchburg State University and the University of Connecticut in the US said: “These factors create a unique physiological environment in which osteoblast and osteoclast activities and cytokine dynamics may respond differently to nutritional interventions compared to other populations.”

The resulting data showed that short-term CP supplementation increased bone formation markers, altered osteoclast-related signaling, and decreased IL-6, an important inflammatory cytokine associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular events.

“These findings support the potential for CP-mediated modulation of bone turnover and inflammatory activity and warrant further investigation in larger, well-powered trials that incorporate structural bone outcomes,” the report states.

Bone metabolism in female long-distance runners

According to the study’s researchers, female long-distance runners are at increased risk for impaired bone remodeling due to higher mechanical loads, potentially lower energy availability, and sustained inflammatory stress.

Collagen peptide (CP) supplementation, in parallel with commonly ingested supplements such as protein, calcium, and vitamin D, has been proposed as a nutritional strategy to support type I collagen synthesis and modulate bone immune signaling.

Collagen peptides (CPs) derived from enzymatically hydrolyzed type I collagen have attracted attention as a potential adjunctive strategy. CP is rich in glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline and is absorbed as bioactive dipeptides and tripeptides that circulate throughout the body and can stimulate osteoblast activity and extracellular matrix synthesis.

However, studies in premenopausal women remain rare, with most studies conducted in men or postmenopausal women.

the study

In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, a sample of 22 active adult women (ages 18-35) who ran at least 35 miles per week were randomized to consume 20g of CP (vital protein) or a placebo per day within 1 hour of waking up.

Participants recorded their dietary intake, including total calories and macronutrients, using the MyFitnessPal app. To facilitate calculation of energy availability (EA), exercise energy expenditure during training sessions or competitions was tracked using a heart rate monitor.

Pre- and post-intervention assessments were conducted early in the follicular phase of participants’ menstrual cycles to reduce fluctuations in bone turnover markers (BTMs) related to fluctuations in estradiol and progesterone.

Assessments included serum procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide (P1NP), plasma type I collagen C-terminal telopeptide (CTX-1), serum soluble receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (sRANKL), osteoprotegerin (OPG), sRANKL/OPG ratio, and interleukin 6 (IL-6). A repeated-measures ANCOVA was performed, adjusting for cumulative mileage and vitamin D status.

The data obtained showed that collagen consumption increased serum procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide (P1NP), an important marker of bone formation, without changing collagen type I C-terminal telopeptide (CTX-1), a marker of bone destruction. This was accompanied by a stabilization of the sRANKL/OPG ratio, a clinical and biological marker of bone metabolism, turnover, and vascular health, and a decrease in circulating IL-6.

“Taken together, these findings support the biological plausibility that CP can influence osteoblast activity and bone immune regulation in populations exposed to repetitive mechanical loading and high skeletal stress,” the report states.

The researchers said that although limited by sample size, short time period, and lack of image-based results, the magnitude and direction of the observed effects warrant further investigation.

“Large-scale, long-term trials incorporating structural bone measurements and extended mechanistic biomarkers are warranted to determine whether these early biochemical changes result in meaningful skeletal adaptation and injury risk reduction in female endurance athletes,” the report states.

sauce: Frontiers of nutritiondoi: 10.3389/fnut.2026.1825906, “Effects of collagen peptide supplementation on bone turnover, cytokines, and inflammatory markers in female long-distance runners: a randomized pilot study”, Authors: Kuhlman, NM et al

#Study #Vital #Protein #Collagen #Regulates #Bone #Turnover #Female #Endurance #Athletes

Published in Frontiers of nutritionThis study investigated the effects of Vital Protein CP supplementation in premenopausal female endurance athletes who experience cyclical hormonal fluctuations and an increased risk of decreased energy availability.
