Another child shared, &#8220;I crawl under the covers with my cat because she calms me down.&#8221; And the third child said, &#8220;I&#8217;m going to hug my stuffed animal.&#8221; Adults can also experience anxiety Adults also experience storm-related anxiety, but this is often coupled with concerns about property damage and safety. \u201cYou get a little nervous about property damage and safety,\u201d said Tom, an educator. He explained how his reactions affect others, saying, &#8220;It causes a little bit of anxiety in me. As an educator, I try to do it for the benefit of my students and to keep them calm.&#8221; Experts explain when fear becomes anxiety Psychologist Karen Manmau explained that anxiety is a natural reaction, but also noted the difference between normal fear and real anxiety. &#8220;So real anxiety can paralyze you, cause you to have panic attacks and nausea, and you don&#8217;t want to leave the house.&#8221; Calming techniques can help during storms To manage anxiety during storms, Mamou recommended calming techniques. &#8220;Some people find it a grounding exercise.&#8221; She also emphasized the importance of parental responsiveness, saying, &#8220;Kids are trying to take cues from us as parents, too. Just giving them the OK to be scared and to be safe at the same time.&#8221; Pets also need comfort and security. Pets can also experience increased stress during storms. &#8220;Pets can hear low frequencies, feel changes in air pressure, and even feel static electricity before a storm hits,&#8221; said Heather Hutt, manager of the Delaware County Golden Retriever Sanctuary. To keep your pet calm, experts suggest keeping the lights on and closing curtains and blinds to protect against lightning. &#8220;Just be calm and reassure your dog. It&#8217;s okay to pet, hug, and sit with your dog during a storm,&#8221; experts say.
