“I went to the hospital, got some medicine and sent her home, but she was still in pain. I went to the hospital again, and there they said, Hey, she’s in so much pain. We’re going to keep her.”<\/p>\n
“When the baby was born, I didn’t have any emotions. I wasn’t happy. I was just very sad, I didn’t have any emotions.<\/p>\n
“That’s when I realized something was wrong, because I was so excited to be pregnant and so excited to have a boy. And when the baby was born, I didn’t have any emotions or anything.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remember being on the ward and still feeling a bit in shock and recovering.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the trauma that childbirth put me through made me go crazy.<\/p>\n
“I came home and couldn’t stop crying. I cried, cried, cried, because as a new mom, I’m not used to not being able to sleep.<\/p>\n
“I remember crying and crying and crying every day. It got worse at night. When I saw the night coming, it was the worst thing for me.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank God I had a supportive husband. I was experiencing postpartum depression and ended up in the mental health unit of the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Stirling-Humphrey then returned to a facility called Helen Mayo House, which provides “inpatient services for parents with significant postnatal mental health issues”, which she believes helped her recovery.<\/p>\n
“I tell myself, I really need help. My little boy needs me so much. That’s when I decided to go back to Helen Mayo’s house just to get the treatment he needed,” Sterling Humphrey said.<\/p>\n
“That’s when I packed up and Andrew took me home to Helen Mayo’s house. That’s when I started crying. I cried every day from the time the baby was born until I started taking medicine and started feeling a little better.<\/p>\n
Stirling-Humphrey talks about returning to netball<\/h3>\n
When Stirling Humphrey retired in 2025, she was considered netball’s top goalkeeper.<\/p>\n
Stirling-Humphrey has been a member of the Jamaican team since competing in the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where he won a bronze medal. Since then, Jamaica has won a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal at the 2023 Netball World Cup.<\/p>\n
She also served as team captain. Domestically, he returned in March, but admitted he is still evaluating how his fight is affecting his game.<\/p>\n

“I’m a little better now, but not where I wanted to be,” she added.<\/p>\n
“I don’t know myself. I’m still trying to find myself.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have good days and bad days, but I am far from where I was and the Shamila I knew. I still don\u2019t know who I am now, but like I said, I have good days and bad days.<\/p>\n
“I have bad days, but today is one of the good days, so I’m really grateful for that, but there are also moments where I just sit there and cry and feel depressed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you play a big game you get nervous and the anxiety it brings is more than I can handle.<\/p>\n
“I’ve been to hell and back and I’m thankful I’m not there anymore. I have a lot of support and like I said, today is a better day, but I have days where I, I, I just can’t deal with it.”<\/p>\n
